Per square foot, a bathroom is often the most expensive room in the house to remodel. NKBA says that's partly down to "the complexities of plumbing and to the need for multiple contractors to work sequentially in a small space" (NKBA Bath Planner). The split looks different from a kitchen's: less goes to cabinets, and much more goes to labor and plumbing.
The category split
From the National Kitchen & Bath Association's Bath Planner (NKBA):
| Category | Share of budget |
|---|---|
| Installation | 20% |
| Cabinetry & hardware (vanity) | 16% |
| Fixtures | 15% |
| Faucets & plumbing | 14% |
| Flooring | 9% |
| Countertops | 7% |
| Walls & ceilings | 5% |
| Lighting & ventilation | 5% |
| Design fees | 4% |
| Doors & windows | 4% |
| Other | 1% |
Like NKBA's kitchen split, it's a 2010 rule of thumb, not a recent survey. NKBA also suggests a 10–20% contingency (NKBA).

What bathrooms cost right now
Houzz 2026 U.S. Houzz & Home Study (2025 projects, DIY and professional) (Houzz 2026, PDF):
- All primary bathroom remodels: median $15,000, 90th percentile $50,000
- Major remodels of large primary baths (100+ sq ft, at least the vanity, countertops, and toilet replaced): median $30,000, 90th percentile $75,000
- Major remodels of smaller primary baths (under 100 sq ft): median $18,000, 90th percentile $44,000
- Guest bathrooms: median $7,000
Angi (updated July 2026) puts the average bathroom remodel at about $12,154, with a typical range of $2,500–$30,000 and $70–$250 per square foot. Labor runs roughly 40–65% of the total. Angi breaks it down by scope as minor $3,000–$10,000, partial $10,000–$25,000, and full $25,000–$80,000 (Angi).
The line items people forget
These come from Angi's bathroom cost guide (Angi):
- Demolition: about $1,000–$2,300
- Permits: about $100–$1,000
- Moving plumbing or electrical: about $5,000 extra
- Water damage found behind walls: about $3.75–$7 per sq ft
Hidden water damage is the classic bathroom surprise. NKBA warns that "there can be hidden water damage" once walls or floors are opened (NKBA). That's why bathrooms deserve the top of the contingency range.
Order matters in a bathroom too
Shower glass can't be measured until the tile is installed, and it then takes about 2–4 weeks from template. Custom vanities run about 6–12 weeks, and special-order tile about 4–8 (Remodel Clock). Rough-in valves are needed before the walls close, well before the visible trim. The free order-by calculator turns those lead times into dates.
Turn the split into a plan
In RenoBinder, each bathroom decision (tile, shower glass, vanity, plumbing fixtures, and lighting) has a planned amount, your chosen option, what's paid, and an order-by date.
